In legends the base of Daojia Mountian’s Fenghuangtai was made from three layers of red stone, at 30 feet high and 20 feet long, and a phoenix would sing there every morning. Legend also has it that phoenix grass grew in the mountains, which attracted the phoenix. In the Song Dynasty, there was a Daoist temple at the peak, with a pagoda on the side, where all students who passed the testing system for civil service will have their names on the monument. About 400 years ago, the Phoenix Book Society was founded by Ming scholars here. People of Dongguan believe that the Society is the pulse and symbol of the Dongguan poetry.
